French playwrights Jean-Toussaint Merle and Antony Béraud cowrote the play Le monstre et le magicien as a stage adaptation of British author Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein. This French play premiered in Paris at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin on June 10, 1826. An English translation by British playwright John Kerr, called The Monster and Magician: Or the Fate of Frankenstein, premiered four months later on October 2 at the West London Theatre, a theatre in Charlotte Street that operated under a variety of names in different periods and that was known in the early 1800s for staging melodramas. This three-act play is itself a melodrama and one of many stage adaptations of Frankenstein. Le monstre et le magicien has the distinction of being the first French dramatic adaptation of the novel to be staged, although Frankenstein had previously been adapted anonymously into a one-act French play that survives in fragmentary form at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal.
